ABOUT TONFANAU QUARRY
-
Opening and Operations: Opened in 1892, the quarry was the only enduring mining venture of its founder, William Williams Jones. It exploited a sill of hard, volcanic ash, dolerite, and gabbro.
-
Industrial Infrastructure: A narrow-gauge railway link to the Cambrian Railways was installed around 1898, later replaced by a standard-gauge siding in 1906. The site featured four working levels, inclines, and crushing plants.
-
World War I & II: German PoWs worked at the site between June 1918 and November 1919. Nearby, the Tonfanau Army Camp was established in 1937 for anti-aircraft training.
-
Ownership and Closure: The quarry was operated by John Corbett of Ynysymaengwyn in the early 20th century. In 1965, it became a subsidiary of Penmaenmawr and Welsh Granite Co. It later operated as Kingston Minerals (1965–1981) and was later worked by G.C. Evans of Aberllefenni.
